Unified Communications

The Idea

More and more workers are using an array of tools to collaborate and communicate amongst each other. The mandated sharing of information between these different tools is requiring a unified approach. This unified approach is based upon the idea that users will interface will all these tools using a common platform, this platform can be either a workstation handheld device, smart phone, and tablet. For example in a unified collaboration environment an information worker should be able to email, instant chat, speak, share files, share screens, and video conference through the same common platform. In addition to using these different mediums the users should be able to file and search through the common platform.

The Challenge

When implementing a unified communications strategy there are key challenges that must be planned for and addressed for success to happen. The first challenge is user experience. Users are apprehensive to change and will require plenty of training and documentation to reference when questions arise and best practices for use of the technology. Our experience has shown that as long as users are presented with a more powerful and simplified interaction the adoption rate of the new technology will be faster and more successful. Another key challenge is planning and executing a phased approach of introducing the different mediums into your common platforms. This introduction will place a heavier burden on your network infrastructure and data store requirements: proper planning and design is necessary to ensure that both are accommodated for.

The Solution

Using a tried and tested phased approach Jolera begins with a communication architectural map that details the required mediums, the common platforms to support the remote access requirements, the storage and archival needs and finally the technologies to service their requirements. Once this map has been finalized Jolera will use a combination of VOIP technologies, Microsoft Lync 2010, Skype, Goto meeting, Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, and Verticals Televantage solution to deliver the businesses unified communication platform. Once the technology strategy is decided an awarding winning project management team takes the customer through the detailed implementation steps ensuring a smooth transition to the new technologies and arranging ample amounts of training through documentation, in person sessions, cheat sheets and video files that can be distributed.
